Who is inspirational to Powers Education today? Marissa Mayer, the CEO of Yahoo! Despite Yahoo’s checkered success in recent years, Mayer remains a strong role model and success story in the tech industry. She got started at Google as the company’s first female engineer after graduating from Stanford and continued to work there for over 10 years.
At Google, Mayer rose through the ranks, working on well know services such as Google Maps, Google Earth, and Gmail. Mayer also has an eye for aesthetics had a hand in the pleasing design of the Google interface and approved all their holiday “doodles”. She was ready for a change and became Yahoo’s CEO in 2012 where she aimed to turn the company around.
To revamp the company, there is much less a focus on Yahoo’s search engine as Mayer purchased Tumblr, developed original video content, hired Katie Couric as an online news anchor, and improved their mobile offerings; all part of working towards Yahoo becoming part of people’s daily lives.
