Our Goal

Your destiny is to succeed, ours is to get you there!

Our mission

Our goal is for every young woman to have the confidence that she can be great at science, to believe in herself and to be rewarded for her achievements. All of our tutors are female role models who teach science in an accessible way. Through the Powers Method, we build a strong, academic foundation for college-level science courses, and simultaneously encourage and increase the number of women who will choose the a career in a scientific field.

Although women constitute the majority of students on college campuses, only one out of five will graduate with a bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). Currently, women hold only 23% of the STEM jobs. Research at leading academic institutions indicates that the lack of women in STEM is attributed to the lack of female role models, and negative stereotypes, which have been shown to deter women from entering the STEM fields because it promotes underestimation in their ability to perform. Powers Education combats these stereotypes and unlocks the true potential of every young woman. We lead by example — all of our tutors are female role models, high achieving science students and exceptional teachers.

WHAT BENEFITS DOES THE STEM FIELD HOLD FOR WOMEN?

Women gain tremendous benefits by entering the STEM field:

1) A prestigious and well paid career: women have an earning premium of 33% by working in the STEM field.

2) Growth: the STEM field is projected to grow 1.7x faster than any other field.

3) Demand: there will be one million fewer STEM graduates over the next decade than U.S. industries will need.

The world we live in today is driven by innovation created through the intersection of science and technology: Facebook, Instagram, and Tesla Motors to name a few! Entering these exciting fields requires early exposure. Research shows that students who are exposed to and learn about science and math are more likely to chose these areas as career paths.  Powers Education exposes high school women to professionals active in their field and shows them that science is not something that is out of reach or for a select few, but something they can succeed in! Through role models and building a strong foundation in the sciences, we help young women become a part of the fastest growing field.  We believe in the potential of women to lead the future advances of our society!

How prepared are high school students for college level math and science?

To be a part of today's fastest growing field — students must be prepared for college level courses. However, only 44% of high school students are ready for college level math and 36% for college level science. Powers Education teaches science methodically to build a strong foundation for such courses and beyond. We get results because we embody the “growth mindset”, which argues that being good at science is not an innate trait, but can be developed over time with the help of others. Research has shown that this way of thinking improves achievement gaps by 30-50%.
