The greatest Olympic swimmer in history, sure, but would Michael Phelps be nearly as ubiquitous if he wasn't a man? What happened to Missy Franklin and Dana Vollmer and all the other swimmers I would see on Wheaties boxes at the supermarket? The media's attention span is not nearly the same for women as it is men; even Phelps's wife gets more press than the former Olympians as a former Miss California! Phelps is undoubtedly a swimming legend, but he would have been a blip on the Olympic Radar if he swam in the other pool.
